We do not know much about the Jewish community in Mikołajki. Even in the archives of the Jewish Historical Institute there is not much information about it. The settlement of Jews in this area was mentioned for the first time in 1820. The Jews who settled here came from Kaliningrad and Vilnius. Around ten Jewish families lived in Mikołajki, they worked in trade, weaving and dressmaking. The Jews from Mikołajki always stressed that they were German of Jewish origin. During the Crystal Night in 1938, the Nazis deported all the Jewish families. Their fate is unknown, none of them has ever returned to the town.
The Jewish cemetery in Mikołajki was founded in 1881 and is situated in Dybowska Street. It is one of the few Jewish cemeteries in Mazury which have been preserved until our time. Tens of tombstones with inscriptions in Hebrew and in German have been preserved. In 2006, thanks to common efforts of the Mikołajki's inhabitants and the Foundation of the Preservation of the Jewish Heritage in Poland, the cemetery was put in order.
For a couple of years the members of The Pentecostal Church of Mikołajki have been taking care of the cemetery. If you wish to support their initiative, you can transfer a donation to their bank account: 35 1020 3639 0000 8502 0076 4365.
